Everyone has a preference in book categories, genres, plot types, and subject matter, but for someone specifically looking for books authored by Black writers, how long does it take to find these books in online catalogs or store aisles? Sure, you can find what’s trending, established authors, and social media best-sellers (nothing wrong with that, as readers double as great marketing tools these days), but what about the books that don’t fit into the ‘right-now’? Where is their place on mainstream bookshelves and curated lists?
Setting the Foundation
For context, there are roughly 2,200 independent bookstore businesses registered with the American Bookstore Association (ABA) and approximately 2,600 bookstore locations across the United States. A quick Google search reveals that there are roughly 130-170 Black-owned, independent bookstores (BOIBs) currently operating. Assuming these are all ABA members, BOIBs account for roughly 5-7% of all independent bookstore locations. Let's further assume that these BOIBs' book inventories are comprised of 70-85% of Black authors (the percentage is probably higher for stores that include Brown authors as well, but for purposes of this discussion, we will focus on Black authors specifically).
The Main Argument
Imagine taking all the book inventories from BOIBs with predominantly Black-authored catalogs, compiling all unique titles and authors, and then comparing how many of those unique titles can be found in Barnes & Noble, or the book sections of Target and Walmart. While exact numbers are unknown, a brief exploration of these stores’ catalogs and curated collections reveals a glaring absence of Black authors (a.k.a., I don't see my people!).
In-store shopping is finite—what’s there is there, and what’s not can probably be found online. When it comes to online shopping via multi-channel retailers or online marketplaces, people tend to have more patience navigating through several pages to find what they're looking for. The selection varies depending on the platform, but these mainstream sites often feel like an endless web of publisher catalogs, self-published works, and miscellaneous literature that require extensive searching. If a reader has a specific author preference and reading experience in mind, why spend the majority of your time browsing platforms that are not catered to you?
This is why independent bookstores carrying predominantly Black literature are essential. These exclusive spaces catering to Black voices are vital. Whether in-person or online, these compact spaces with curated selections cater to specific readers. BOIBs have the ability to narrow down the thousands of published works in the literary ecosystem to more manageable numbers. Independent booksellers can take a prospective customer's book inquiry and provide tailored recommendations because they have complete control over the titles offered. These niche-specific establishments ensure that the Black experience is no longer an afterthought, disregarded, or censored in the literary community.
While prices and the assortment of titles offered may not always be comparable to Amazon or Target, the experience is unmatched. Whether it's seeing a Black person on a book cover, the easy-going interactions with the booksellers, or the relatable book synopses, navigating these Black spaces is a dream, one that's keeps you coming back for more.
Supporting Independent Bookstores
Supporting independent bookstores is crucial for the visibility and success of established and independent authors, alike. These bookstores provide a platform for voices that might otherwise be overlooked or just need their first big break. By shopping at and supporting BOIBs, readers help sustain a vital space for diverse stories and perspectives. Let's continue to champion these essential institutions and ensure that Black literature continues to thrive.
